The Importance of Actors
A writer named Anton sent me a comment about a recent blog concerning actors in America. He mentions that it "is a shame that most actors live lives of poverty." He's right. I can't for the life of me understand why this country doesn't consider the actor and the business and art of acting to be important. The movie business alone accounts for billions in revenue not only in America but around the world.
Yes, we have our stars who make millions but for the most part actors today have no better life as actors, than their counterparts in Shakespeares Engand who were buried in Potters fields of common ground.
Maybe the economy will change that.
In the years after the depression, actors were begun to be taken seriously. This country found value in the arts.
Right now the best avenue for gain an actor has in America is to be a member of a performers union, AFTRA, SAG or Actors Equity. At least through a union collective bargaining agreement actors are paid a good wage for their work and are protected against employer gouging.
If you are an actor, become a professional and join a union. Stage, Film, TV, Voiceover. It doesn't make a differene. Join a union and get a good franchised agent. It will make a difference in your career, if you're serious about it and it will help change the current work environment.
