David Dukes

David Dukes was a great actor. He was a modern actor. Enough Method to satisfy the great actors of the sixties when people really understood Brando and Clift and Dean and modern enough to not be considered a jerk.
I worked with David in a movie made for TV in the 70's when I was living and starting out as an actor in Washington DC. It was originally called Voyage of the Mayflower: Here There be Dragons. I was aware of David from his stage work and soon after that he did a number of made for TV movies. Also in the cast were Richard Crenna and a rather young Anthony Hopkins. Anyway, I played a seaman Pilgrim on this film and when David got to Broadway in Amadeus, playing Salieri, I contacted him and asked if I could come up and see him. He invited me backstage after the performance and we shared schnifters of Jack Daniels which he said soothed his voice during the show. He couldn't have been kinder and we sat for a long time smoking cigaretttes and drinking Jack talking about the business while a raging snowstorm roared outside the Helen Hayes Theatre on 46th Street.
David passed away some years ago and to this day I prefer to drink Jack Daniels from my schnifter and always think of David Dukes and the hospitality he offered me.
